Dispute Resolution Research: Disparity Paper wins Advancement Award
March 15, 2021 – St. John’s University announced the winners of its 2021 Dispute Resolution Research Advancement Award. Researchers Avital Mentovich, J.J. Prescott, and Orna Rabinovich-Einy won the award for their paper: “Are Litigation Outcome Disparities Inevitable? Courts, Technology, and the Future of Impartiality.”

The Pew Charitable Trusts and Karen Lash of American University created a series of case studies on funding access to justice initiatives. In particular, Michigan’s 20th Circuit Court in Ottawa County used Title IV-D funds for its ODR efforts starting in 2016. Critically, the Ottawa County court’s ODR platform provided important benefits for families and the court.

The Michigan Supreme Court’s Justice for All Task Force released its Strategic Plan and Inventory Report. The Task Force report contains an inventory of Michigan’s civil justice system and prioritized next steps to ensure access to justice for all. Michigan’s MI-Resolve online dispute resolution system was mentioned as a milestone and an opportunity in the report.

Decatur, GA. The DeKalb County Magistrates Court has launched online dispute resolution (ODR) for small claims cases. The ODR platform allows people with monetary disputes less than $15,000 to resolve their cases from anywhere and at any time. Congratulations to Chief Judge Berryl A. The Delaware Justice of the Peace Court launched an Online Dispute Resolution (ODR) platform for Landlord-Tenant cases in early November, 2020. Parties can use this platform to resolve a filed court case online, without needing to “go to court” in person.
