ODR to remove recovery barriers session abstract

Substance abuse, in particular the opioid crisis, is a powerful stress on our communities, our law enforcement, and our courts. This session covers a collaboration between seven courts in Washtenaw County, Michigan and nonprofits in the recovery community to provide technology to ease barriers to recovery.

Clients of substance abuse treatment organizations experience difficulty

  • entering and completing treatment,
  • accessing housing, and
  • getting jobs
  • because of outstanding legal obligations.

At the same time, the courts are seeking to proactively engage with all members of the community, increase access to justice, help community members from all backgrounds resolve legal obligations, and provide alternatives to incarceration where possible. Technology, in the form of an online system for requesting and resolving open issues such as tickets, warrants, and unpaid fines has aided these efforts in Washtenaw County.

The presenters will share outcomes and lessons learned from their initiative – launched in the summer of 2018.

Join us Tuesday February 12 at 1:45PM for the session in Little Rock.
