WOODTV: Online Dispute Resolution keeps Small Claims out of Court

May 28, 2020 – WOOD-TV in Grand Rapids, Michigan covered the expansion of the MI-Resolve online dispute resolution program to the Dispute Resolution Center of West Michigan. View the video.

WOODTV’s Barton Dieters spoke with Michigan Chief Justice Bridget Mary McCormack, Dispute Resolution Center of West Michigan Executive Director, Christine Gilman, and MI-Resolve Manager Michelle Hilliker, who works within the Office of Dispute Resolution at the Michigan Supreme Court.

This program launched before the pandemic, and its expansion comes at a time when people may have additional challenges “going to court” to resolve issues. People can work with another party with the support of a mediator to resolve their issue, from anywhere, including from their mobile phone.

In the segment, Chief Justice McCormack pointed to MI-Resolve as a part of the state’s pandemic response.

“I’ve said every day of this, we’re going to be doing business completely differently after COVID-19 in our courts and I see online dispute resolution as a big part of what we offer the public.”

Michigan Chief Justice Bridget Mary McCormack, quoted in the WOODTV Article

Congratulations to Executive Director Christine Gilman and the team at the Dispute Resolution Center of West Michigan as well as Michelle Hilliker and the team at the Office of Dispute Resolution at the Supreme Court for expanding this program across the state.
